WP2 : Investigating the wastewater situation (Leader : TTZ)

>> Work Program

Objectives

  • To investigate and to assess the wastewater situation in the MPCs, Agadir, Morocco, and Gabès, Tunisia
  • To develop spatial implementation scenarios for the two pilote sites

Tasks

This workpackage will be accomplished in parallel to WP3 and 4. Two pilote regions have been chosen to accomplish the implementation study  :

  • Agadir in Morocco, with 400.000 inhabitants and serious wastewater treatment problems. This region represents 70% of exported vegetables, and citrus. 60% of Morocco's greenhouses are located in this area, as well as 80% of the soil-less cultures (over 400ha). In Agadir there is a potential to re-construct existing greenhouses, as well as to construct directly the new greenhouse generation.
  • Gabès in Tunisia, with 350.000 inhabitants, important industrial installations and some touristic interest. Gabès has serious problems with fresh water supply and an extreme high competition between agriculture, industry and drinking water supply. Therefore, an expensive desalination unit, functioning by reverse osmosis, has been already installed. The CYCLER-SUPPORT project can offer interesting economical alternatives for the water management of the city.

Task 2.1 : Wastewater situation assessment (task leader: ENIT)

ENIT will be responsible for the investigation and the assessment of the wastewater situation in Tunesia. In Morocco, this task will be undertaken by IAV. The task includes  :

  • the investigation of today's wastewater collection and treatment systems
  • the investigation and comparison of thresholds for water qualities in the MPCs and Europe: drinking water, different required qualities for domestic uses
(laundry, washing, hygiene etc.) and horticultural/agricultural irrigation (supported by IAMB)
  • the investigation of regulations for biological and chemical contaminations of agricultural products in the MPCs and Europe (supported by TTZ)
  • the research of solutions for the wastewater pre-treatment and collection, applicable for the new greenhouse generation (supported by TTZ and TUB)
  • the research of solutions for the wastewater transport to the greenhouses
    (supported by TTZ and TUB)
  • the research of solutions for the wastewater handling (hygienic aspects)
    (supported by IAMB)

Task 2.2 : of first implementation concepts (task leader: TTZ)

On basis of task 2.1, TUB, TTZ, ENIT and IAV will develop concepts for a potential spatial implementation of the new CYCLER greenhouse generation, with focus on  :

  • best possible locations
  • potential for re-using existing greenhouse structures
  • potentials for new greenhouse locations
  • suitable size of the greenhouse units (centralised versus decentralised)
  • Finding solutions for the wastewater handling (hygienic aspects) (supported by IAMB)

The results will later be part of the more detailed implementation scenarios in WP 5.

Deliverables

D04 : Report on the wastewater situation in the MPCs, with focus on the two pilote locations.
D05 : Two scenarios for the new greenhouse generation implementation in the two pilote locations (AUTO-CAD plan and scenario description).

Milestones and expected results

M02 : Overview of potential locations and special structures of the new greenhouse generation related to the irrigation source and distribution.
